Core Martial ArtsIn order for students to learn the valuable aspects of each art and to respect the fact that every art has something to offer, the main and starting class at Martin Academy of Martial Arts will be the Core Martial Arts Package. The Core Martial Arts program is a combination of Bruce Lee’s Jun Fan /Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun, Filipino Arts of Kali / Silat, Thai Boxing and grappling from the Machados, and Erik Paulson’s Combat Submission Wrestling. The first six to nine months the students will be introduced to boxing and kicking skills with portions of grappling and weapon work. As the student grows, he or she may find an area they want to devote more time to than another because of preference or lack of ability in a particular area. For example, they may decide to take extra classes in Kali or the ground work. Students will learn punches, kicking, elbows, and knees along with the different ranges all of those tools cover. Thai Boxing develops speed and power and is at the top of the list for cardiovascular endurance. Even if you are a runner, kicking the Thai Pads will challenge your cardio endurance. As the student advances they will be evaluated in three areas: Attitude, Technique and Attendance. At that time they may be invited to upgrade to the next Phase and participate in the Phase lV Total Street Defense. As the academy grows we will add individual classes in the Filipino Martial Arts, Wing Chun, Jiu Jitsu or Erik Paulson’s Combat Submission Wrestling. We try to provide the students with a balanced education in the arts. Each art has something to offer and after time a student may decide to specialize in a particular area or after an invitation, pursue a teaching certificate by joining the CIT (Certified Instructor Training) program. Just because a student reaches the Phase lV level or Black Belt doesn’t mean they will be qualified to teach. To join the CIT, just like the Phase lV or Black Belt, a student must be committed, have a good attitude, skills and the desire to go to the next level. The purpose of an instructor is to encourage each student to be the best they can possibly be in learning to link the different arts together. These classes are for adults of all ages, no matter what level of experience one has. Everyone will be able to participate and progress at their own level. Adults from their 50s on up will improve physically and mentally by taking martial arts. In addition to the Core Package classes MAMAs will also have classes in Yoga Jiu Jitsu, classes geared toward self-defense and safety for Realtors. |
