Martin Academy’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Program is a well-rounded grappling system that blends traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals and Self Defense with Coach Erik’s deep experience in wrestling, catch wrestling, & submission grappling.

Classes taught follow a proven and effective curriculum with an emphasis on safety, self-defense and respect.  Students learn all phases of grappling, from standup takedowns, throws to submissions in a healthy, clean and supportive environment.

In addition, the class provides an incredible physical workout that will increase your strength, flexibility, cardio and mental ability to handle and succeed adversities on and off the mat.   Many feel the power and skills they learn on the mat are far greater than the physical attributes they hoped to learn when first joining.

Come join the family and learn for yourself the many benefits Combat Submission Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for your Gi and No Gi training.  Below is a brief intro to Coach/Sensei/ Professor Paulson….

CSW Association President

Erik Paulson is a world-renowned martial artist and the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW) and STX Kickboxing. He began training Judo as a child and, by 1988, was studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Rorion, Royce, and Rickson Gracie in Rickson’s garage. At the Inosanto Academy he connected with Yorinaga Nakamura and immersed himself in Shoot Wrestling, later adding intensive Catch Wrestling under the legendary Billy Robinson. This multi-discipline path shaped the CSW system’s blend of pressure, control, and submission fluency.

Competing through the 1990s, Paulson became the first American to win a Shooto world title in Japan, capturing the Light Heavyweight championship and helping bridge Japanese shootfighting with modern MMA. His fight career includes wins in Shooto and appearances in top events of the era.

Today, Erik leads the CSW Training Center in Fullerton, California, coaching and mentoring elite athletes and coaches. His students and training partners through the years include names like Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Renato Sobral, Cub Swanson, James Wilks, Sean Sherk, and Brock Lesnar. He also served as striking coach for Team Lesnar on The Ultimate Fighter Season 13.

Beyond the mat, Paulson continues to publish curriculum, film instructional libraries, and certify CSW and STX coaches worldwide through the CSW Association. His programs integrate the best of catch wrestling, BJJ, judo, wrestling, Muay Thai, and Jun Fan/JKD principles into a results-driven system for competitors, coaches, and self-defense practitioners.
